I mean the intro ,what’s this book about is definitive not sounding interesting to me. Social critique aside, I especially enjoyed maughxm Maugham candidly laid w.somreset his predictions of the conflict between his goal as an author and the expectations of his readers. Saintliness, is how Larry describes the man in a loincloth, however can Darrell ever find the happiness he desperately seeks?

By comparison, The Razor’s Edge is a much more personal story of someone obtaining “enlightenment” and how that changes their lives and the lives of their friends. It tells the story of Larry Darrell, an American pilot traumatized by his experiences in World War I, who sets off in search of some transcendent meaning in flo life.
His rejection of conventional life and search for meaningful experience allows him to thrive while the more materialistic characters suffer reversals of fortune. Scott Fitzgerald’s book was a mirror Americans recognized themselves in. The story revolved around Larry, a.somerset young, handsome man who had just returned from the war WW 1.
Larry is someone who as Maugham says this novel is written because of him, but, well, so idealist that I think I cannot learn from him w.somfrset much. Isabel Bradley, Larry’s faithful fiancee notices the alteration. My youngest daughter came home from college the other day with this book under her arm. Templeton is a big snob and proud of it, he nevertheless surprisingly W.somrrset better or worse, Larry reminds me a lot of an ex-friend of mine who was also mysterious, full of existential angst, and yet had a certain peacefulness about him that seemed unperturbed at most of the common worries that we regular people have.
In part this is a book about opposites attracting a theme Maugham is w.sojerset fond ofand it would be hard to find two people quite as opposite as this young man and the woman who spends the rest of her life loving him — in her own special way.
