If Graciliano Ramos’ intention was to convey the reason that ” Painting the backland family headed by Fabiano and Vitoria, along with their two boys, the reader cannot help but feel despair and an intense desire for change from the drought-ridden, hard-scrabble existence of this family. Simple people, depicted essentially as beasts If Graciliano Ramos’ intention was to convey the reason that ” Simple people, depicted essentially as beasts of burden who are following their basest instinct for survival, this family tries tirelessly to survive and get ahead.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature and the wealthy, smarter locals conspire to make it almost impossible. Yes, it is a dark, barren story. Yes, it is deceptively simple.
Yes, it is profound.

Barren Lives covers a brief period of time in the life of a family as they try to eke out a living as farm hands on a ranch in a small village.
Thematically the book reminds me of The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck except that the family is more hopeful in Barren Lives because they are still on the move at the end of the book. Steinbeck’s family reaches the promised land California only to find poverty and exploitation. The book is written in a straightforward manner.
The text Barren Lives covers a brief period of time in the life of a family as they try to eke out a living as farm hands on a ranch in a small village. The text is as barren as the farm lands have been rendered by the drought.

Destaque para a cadelinha Baleia, uma das mais humanas personagens da literatura. Uma cidade grande, cheia de pessoas fortes. Chegariam a uma terra desconhecida e civilizada, ficariam presos nela.
Muito bom uma criatura ser assim, ter recurso para se defender. Livres ramoe nomes, as coisas ficavam distantes, misteriosas. Vistas de longe eram bonitas. Andara para cima e para baixo, procurando em que desabafar. Como batren tudo em ordem, queixara-se da vida. Duro, lerdo como tatu. Na verdade falava pouco. Os infelizes tinham caminhado o dia inteiro, estavam cansados e famintos.
